What is a Havurah?
Are you like many who have heard about a Havurah, but don't know that it is? Well, it is not a pastry. Nor is it a mysterious religious group that spends all its time studying the Talmud. But, it could be.
Actually, Havurahs or Havurot (plural) are small groups of people who have a common interest and get together periodically to share that interest with each other. The Harurot movement started on the west coast in the 60's, when small groups of Jews decided to get together to schmooze and enjoy each other's company. This was part of the anti-establishment feeling of the times. Many Jews wanted a more personal relationship than the big synagogues had to offer.
Havurot have been in vogue here at Har Shalom for many years. Here, and at many synagogues, groups of ten to twenty people have formed Havurot for many reasons. Some, consisting of young adults, just want to get together once a month with others of their age to enjoy a evening without the kids. Other Havurot consist of folks who like to walk. They get together monthly and take early morning walks around the area. Others, whose children have grown and left the nest, get together once a month to share Shabbat dinners and talk over the week's activities.
