Sunday Brunches
Each year on the first Sunday of the month October through May, we prepare the Men’s Club Brunch. Outstanding speakers and ample time for smoozing are preceded by a multi course all-you-can-eat meal consisting of lox, bagels & cream cheese, fresh fruit, tuna & white fish salads, herring, Israeli salad, fresh vegetables, and assorted pastries and beverages. And you can bring your spouse or other friend of your choice at no additional charge. What a deal!!! Many wives attend, and the Sisterhood joins us for one mega brunch a year. Refer to the calendar of events for brunch dates and speaker topics.
Purim Carnival
Each winter, we sponsor the annual Purim Carnival for our Hebrew School children. Our doors open at 11:00 to allow the very young to try the games without interfering upper classmen. But what a melee occurs when the doors burst open at noon and lines form at the hot dog stand, moon bounce, or other less invigorating booths. Whether we financially break even or not, the objective of entertaining our youth at this particular time of the year is met.
Sukkah Building
Succah raising is also an important autumn activity requiring a dozen able bodied men. Last year we acquired a new, much larger succah. Throughout the holiday of Succot, congregants will meet and enjoy onegs in our grand succah.
Sports & Games
Our Sunday morning softball team represented Har Shalom
very successfully competing against other area synagogue men’s clubs, other
members maintained their aerobic capability playing full-court basketball at
a nearby gymnasium, while others went on fishing expeditions to the
Chesapeake Bay. A bi-weekly party bridge tournament ran for many years and
needs rejuvenating.
Basketball is now underway. We play every Sunday morning from 9-11 am (except when brunches are held) at Richard Montgomery
High School. Try it -- the first two times are free. It is open to all, without regard to age or ability. If
you have any questions, contact Roy Simon or Ken Shere at mensclub@harshalom.org.
Special Projects
Special projects include the annual Saturday morning Shabbat service run completely by the Men’s Club, a new gardening project supporting the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes, procuring meeting equipment for synagogue and Men’s Club use, distributing Yom HaShoach memorial candles to members and college students, contributing to Israel Quest, providing selected books to B’nai Mitzvah, celebrating the World Wide Wrap, helping at the end-of-school-year picnic, donating to the Capital Campaign, and occasionally assisting as kitchen helpers.
