A
Sample of the Many Men's Club Activities
Sunday Brunches.
Each year
on the first Sunday of the month October through June, we provide the
Men’s Club Speaker’s Brunch. Outstanding speakers and ample time for
smoozing are preceded by a multi course all-you-can-eat meal consisting
of lox, bagels & cream cheese, fresh fruit, tuna & white fish salads,
herring, Israeli salad, fresh vegetables, eggs and assorted pastries and
beverages. You can bring your spouse or friend of your choice at no
additional charge. Actually, there is no charge. What a deal!!! Many
wives attend, and the Sisterhood joins us for one mega brunch a year.
Refer to the
calendar of events
for brunch dates and speaker topics.
Purim Carnival.
Each winter, we sponsor the annual Purim
Carnival for our children of all ages. Our doors open at 11:00 to allow
the very young to enter. Usually they come in costume. A melee occurs
when the doors burst open at noon and lines form at the hot dog stand,
moon bounce, or other less invigorating booths. Games of change and
bounce activities are joined by Hal the Clown who entertains the kids.
Whether we financially break even or not, the objective of entertaining
our youth at this particular time of the year is met.
Sukkah Building.
Sukkah
raising is an important autumn activity requiring a dozen able bodied
men and their teenage children. Pizza and beer make the effort as fun as
fulfilling. For a second year, Men’s Club is also providing Home Sukkah
Kits for our congregants. Priced reasonably at $180, the Sukkah kits
have a large 8 X 10 area, are durable, easily assembled and are a worth
while investment.
Sports & Games.
Our Sunday morning softball team
represents Har Shalom very successfully competing against other area
synagogue men’s clubs. Other members maintain their aerobic capability
playing full-court basketball at a nearby gymnasium. In the spring Men’s
Club participates in a Basketball Challenge Game with the USY Youth
Group.
Kids ‘N Dads. This program provides an opportunity for dads and
grand dads to spend quality time with their children while schmoozing
with other Jewish guys. Activities on Sunday afternoons, include
bowling, laser tag, and ice skating among others. Tikkun Olam community
service activities, such as painting a Women’s Transitional Living
Facility and feeding homeless men on Christmas day, also provide a way
to give back to the community.
Wellness Program.
This program is aimed at increasing the health and quality of life of
our members. Five Minute Health Tips are given at our Sunday
Speaker Brunches and published for the congregation. Speakers are
brought in to address health topics of interest. A Health Fair is held
in the spring to allow members to ascertain measurements of important
health indicators.
Youth
Activities.
Men’s Club support our youth through grants for a Youth Leader,
participation in the Learning Minyan and Teffilin training for sixth and
seventh graders for the World Wide Web. A Summer Camp Fair is provided
in the fall for children’s parents.
Collaborative Events with other Har Shalom Organizations and Committees.
Men’s Club and Sisterhood jointly sponsor a Theatre Night in the fall, a
Meshuga Mixer Social in the spring and a joint Speaker’s Brunch. Men’s
Club sponsors an Israeli Movie Night with the World Jewry Committee.
Men’s Club participates in the Har Shalom spring House Tour.
