During these trying times food donations in Montgomery County have decreased by 50%, while needs have increased by nearly the same amount. Furloughed, laid off, and those unable to find work in an economy made weak by COVID-19 have added over 30,000 Montgomery County residents to those who don't know where their next meal is coming from. 115,000 of our neighbors risk going to bed hungry. These neighbors are children, seniors with limited incomes, and the working poor, many of whom are essential personnel working throughout the pandemic. Har Shalom conducts food drives to support food warehouses and local shelters. But we can do more!
KindSoup for the Soul is coming to Har Shalom! We’re joining KindWorks’ KINDdemic, and will be coming together, in our own kitchens, every two weeks for some fun and to create a community of healthy meal donors in the County. KindWorks is a local organization that inspires action for a kinder world, meeting pressing community needs and building community by mobilizing individuals in volunteer service. We’ve borrowed their program model so we can create a community of healthy meal donors in the County. We’ll be cooking enough to feed our own families PLUS to pack up containers to freeze and deliver to one of the local consolidation Hubs in the County, so that those whom they serve can have some delicious and nutritious meals!
Each Monday, the Sunday recipe and shopping list will be announced so participants have time to add needed ingredients to their shopping lists. Zoom and internet links will also be included each week in At Home with Har Shalom and the Shabbat Shalom message.
Have your ingredients ready, grab a cup of tea or wine, and let's cook and chat! Please join us as a participant or as a guest chef! Consider sharing your favorite vegetarian soup or stew recipe and leading a session. A range of different cultures and cooking techniques would be an added bonus!
