Responsibilities of Board of Directors - Member
What are the core responsibilities of this role?
- Serve as a liaison for members to share feedback and ideas with relevant staff, the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, as well as volunteers and committees
- Lead or actively participate in one or more standing or special committees
- Provide input on the long-term planning strategy of the Congregation
- Review the Executive Committee’s actions including but not limited to, establishment/revoking Congregational policies, activities and commitments.
- Approve committee chairs and members appointments by the President
- Review and approve the annual budget as submitted to it by the Executive Committee prior to Congregational review and approval.
- Approve the hiring / termination of clergy, Executive Director, and education leadership.
- Authorize any action on assets or property of the congregation.Attend services, programs and other community events as an ambassador of the Board of Directors, encourage member participation in services, programming and events.
- Attend congregational community events, demonstrating a strong Board member presence.
- Abide by all other duties stipulated in the bylaws.

- Friendly, welcoming demeanor, comfortable engaging with current and prospective members.
- Collaborative and flexible, willing and able to work collegially with staff and volunteers
- Strong communication skills, able to articulate the mission and priorities of our community.
- Maturity, able to be discreet and hold synagogue information in confidence, including during executive sessions of the Board of Directors
- Patient and empathetic listener, willing to listen to member concerns and feedback
- Diplomatic, able to assess diverse perspectives and different constituencies.
- Attentive to the needs of the community, able to separate personal feelings from official role
What will the time commitment for this role be?
- 2-5 hours / month to participate in Board of Directors and relevant committee meetings
- Weekly Kabbalat Shabbat, Shabbat morning service and minyanim attendance, when possible
- Regular attendance at small and large congregational events, including outside your affinity group when possible
