Men's Club - Speaker Series

9:30 AMOur special guests Aruna Miller, Lt. Governor & Senator Cheryl Kagan, will report on Maryland’s recent accomplishments under Governor Wes Moore and future legislation. A Q&A follows the presentation. The Brunch is free and no RSVP is required. Your attendance at the 9:00 am minyan before the brunch is greatly appreciated. A voluntary donation to help the Men's Club offset the brunch food cost is appreciated as well. The brunch will conclude before the Religious School dismissal, for parents who wish to attend.

Aruna Miller, Lieutenant Governor, State of Maryland
In 2022 Aruna Miller became the first woman of color to hold a statewide office in Maryland and the first South Asian woman ever elected lieutenant governor in the U.S. Prior to that Aruna represented Maryland’s Legislative District 15 in the House of Delegates for eight years. She lives in Montgomery County with her husband David, where they raised three daughters.
As Lieutenant Governor, Aruna has leveraged her engineering background to advance Maryland’s STEM workforce and expand STEM equity, positioning the state as a hub for tech innovation and business growth. Her hands-on experience in transportation has helped her lead efforts to improve road safety. Aruna has also worked to confront the state’s growing challenges around overdose and mental health with a focus on prevention and support.
Cheryl C. Kagan, Senator, State of Maryland
Cheryl is a Har Shalom member currently serving as our Maryland Senator representing District 17 Montgomery County (Rockville & Gaithersburg) since 2015. She is a member of the Democratic Party and previously represented the district in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1995 to 2003.
In 2019, Cheryl was appointed by the Senate President as Vice Chair of the committee now known as “Triple E,” Education, Energy & the Environment (&Elections); she is also the Senate appointee to the Maryland State Arts Council and the Maryland Open Data Council.
