Religious School
Har Shalom’s Religious School is not the Hebrew School you remember! We are a dynamic, engaging and nurturing community that offers Jewish learning for students in pre-K through post Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Students enjoy studying Judaism and Hebrew while connecting to their Jewish heritage and community. Families come together to celebrate the beauty of Shabbat, Jewish holidays and Jewish study.
Our students address the topics of Hebrew, Holidays, Israel, Tanakh, Jewish Values, Jewish History and T'fillot. Our students thrive in our interactive classes which honor multiple styles of learning. We embrace 21 Century Jewish education principles in all grades and strive to create valuable and memorable experiences for our children and their families. We offer unique programs for our students. We have a custom made Twinning program specifically for our school. This program partners our classes with peer group classes in Israel. Together they study the circle of Jewish life and identity. The classes use digital platforms to discuss Jewish Values and compare the differences in Jewish life between our community and Israel.
Starting in 8th grade, our students enter our high school program. Our monthly programming kicks off with pizza, schmoozing and snacks and will be followed by YouTube videos, debates, conversation and games. This year, Ben Gersten, a fellow millennial Jew, will moderate the conversation about the hot topics in our community. Put down the AP Bio review book and put Fortnite to rest you don't want to miss what we've got in store.
During the year leading up to Confirmation, we will be reading Yossi Klein Halevi's acclaimed book Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor. The author describes the book as "an attempt to explain to my neighbors who I am as an Israeli Jew, who my people are, what our story is, and it's an invitation to a deep conversation between Israelis and Palestinians about our stories." Together we will read selected letters and discuss how to speak not only to the conflict, but also to Jewish values and our relationship to the State of Israel. Plan on having some energetic discussions!
