Daytimers Jewish Film Festival: "Phoenix"
Wednesday, February 21, 2018 • 6 Adar 5778
12:00 PM - 2:00 PMSocial HallThis evocative and haunting drama set in 1945 rubble-strewn Berlin is like no other film about post WWII Jewish-German identity. Auschwitz survivor and former cabaret singer, Nelly, has her disfigured face reconstructed and returns to Berlin to seek out her gentile husband, who may or may not have betrayed her to the Nazis. Without recognizing her, he enlists her to play his wife in bizarre hall-of-shattered-mirrors story. Is it a revenge film or tale of romantic reconciliation? You won’t know until the superb closing scene.
With a few exceptions, due to Holidays, the Film Festival convenes on the third Wednesday of each month, September to June and features outstanding motion pictures from the US, Israel and Europe. Attendees may bring a pareve or dairy brown-bag lunch. Beverages and desserts are provided. Programs start promptly at 12:30 pm.
